India launches navigation satellite into orbit
Indian Space Research Organization marks 100th launch from Satish Dhawan Space Centre
NEW DELHI
The Indian Space Research Organization announced Wednesday that it successfully launched a navigation satellite into orbit.
The geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) carrying the navigation satellite NVS-02 took off at 6.23 a.m. (0053GMT) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, the organization said.
“The GSLV-F15/NVS-02 mission has been successfully accomplished. India reaches new heights in space navigation,” it wrote on X.
This was the 100th liftoff from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, and over a span of 99 launches, various missions have been carried out, the organization said.
It said NVS-02 is the next-gen satellite in the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) series.
NavIC, according to the space organization, is the country's independent regional navigation satellite system “designed to provide accurate position, velocity and timing service to users in India as well as to regions extending about 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) beyond Indian land mass.”
