Türkiye and Pakistan agreed Wednesday to strengthen cooperation in disaster management, according to Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The agreement was reached at the pioneering event of the Pakistan-Türkiye International Simulation Exercise (Sim-Ex) which was held online.

This exercise organized by NDMA and Türkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) focused on preparing for and responding to floods and earthquakes.

“This first-of-its-kind exercise aimed to bolster collaboration between the two nations, enhancing their ability to manage and mitigate the impacts of natural disasters,” NDMA said in a statement.

Participants engaged in various scenarios, addressing challenges and strategies involved in dealing with severe floods and devastating earthquakes.

NDMA Chairman Lieut. Gen. Inam Haider Malik underscored the importance of cooperation during disasters.

He emphasized the need for preparedness and a proactive approach to disaster management, highlighting that collaborative exercises are crucial for effective response and resilience building.

Yusuf Aysu, the head of AFAD’s Department of Response Plans and Exercise, said the exercise provided “valuable” insights and strengthened the partnership between Pakistan and Türkiye in disaster management.

“The successful completion of this simulation exercise marks a significant step forward in the international collaboration between Pakistan and Turkey, ensuring both countries are better equipped to handle future natural disasters,” the statement added.

AFAD, along with several Turkish relief agencies, have been carrying out projects in education, health and disaster management across Pakistan.
