The Philippines is pushing for stronger energy cooperation among Southeast Asian nations as disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz crisis put pressure on global energy supplies and prices, local media reported Monday.
The Philippines is hosting the 44th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting and associated meetings in Manila on Oct. 5-9, the Philippine Information Agency, the government's official news information arm, reported.
Preparatory meetings of senior energy officials are being held on Monday and Tuesday, while ASEAN energy ministers and counterparts from partner countries will meet on Oct. 7-8.
“Energy security is a shared challenge,” Philippine Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said, warning that disruptions in global energy markets could affect fuel availability, industries, and households.
Manila will push for stronger petroleum supply preparedness, regional electricity connectivity, diversified energy sources, and greater energy efficiency.
The talks come as the Philippines holds the rotating ASEAN chairmanship and prepares to host the bloc’s annual leaders’ summit in Manila later this month.
The 48th ASEAN Summit and related summits are scheduled for Oct. 27-29, bringing together leaders from the 11-member bloc and dialogue partners.
