Lawmakers from five opposition parties in South Korea have filed an impeachment motion against acting President Choi Sang-mok, accusing him of obstructing judicial appointments and being linked to an alleged martial law attempt, Yonhap News reported.

The motion argues that Choi refused to appoint the ninth justice to the Constitutional Court, which is currently hearing the case of suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol. The opposition-led National Assembly submitted the motion, with the Democratic Party spearheading the effort.

With only 150 votes needed to pass the impeachment in the 300-member legislature, and the opposition bloc holding more than 190 seats, the motion is expected to succeed.

South Korea’s Constitutional Court has a total capacity of nine judges, but only eight are currently serving. Choi allegedly blocked the appointment of Ma Yong-ju, who was nominated by parliament.

Choi, who also serves as finance minister, faces additional accusations of involvement in Yoon’s alleged attempt to impose martial law on Dec. 3.

Choi was appointed acting president after opposition lawmakers impeached then-Prime Minister Han Duck-soo in December. Han, who became interim president following Yoon’s impeachment, is awaiting a final ruling from the Constitutional Court on his fate, with a decision expected Monday.​​​​​​​
