Grammys 2016: Taylor Swift wins album of the year

NEW YORK

 Three most coveted prizes at the 58th Grammy Awards went to three different names on Monday night, with Taylor Swift's 1989 winning album of the year.

"Uptown Funk", a song by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, was named record of the year, while "Thinking Out Loud", co-written by Ed Sheeran and Amy Wadge, won song of the year.

Sheeran also took home best pop solo performance prize with the song.

Kendrick Lamar, who led the nominations with a total of 11, won five despite losing in the main categories. He won best rap performance and best rap song prizes with "Alright", as well as best rap album award for "To Pimp A Butterfly".

The blues-rock quartet Alabama Shakes also won big with four honors, including best rock song for "Don't Wanna Fight" and best alternative music album for "Sound & Color".

British alternative rock outfit Muse took home the best rock album award with "Drones".

Other winners of the night include The Weeknd, who won two honors; Meghan Trainor, who was named the best new artist; and Tony Bennett, who won his 18th Grammy for best traditional pop vocal album.

Arguably the most prestigious award of the recording industry, a Grammy of any sort usually results in bigger record sales as well as increased recognition for the artists.
