SANLIURFA, Turkey
A new road project has been launched to promote tourism in the ancient city of Suayb in southeastern Sanliurfa province, a provincial district governor told Anadolu Agency on Sunday.
Suayb in Harran district is considered one of the most important historical places in the province and is said to date back to the Roman period.
In an interview, Harran District Governor Temel Ayca said highlighted the historical significance and tourist potential of his region.
Ayca said a "tourism road project" had been launched in the area, which aims to make visits of tourists to the historic city more comfortable.
"This project is very important for Harran. The road links the Bazda Caves, ancient Suayb city and [ancient village] Sogmatar, will provide to the visitors more comfort during their trips," Ayca added.
Meanwhile, Harran University’s Archeology Department head Mehmet Onal also said that the Suayb city dates back to the Roman Empire, which he said people believed was similar to the ancient city of Ephesus in Izmir province.
Also, people believe that one of Islam’s Prophet Suayb lived there, where he met Prophet Musa.
