Bulgaria’s Economy and Energy Ministry is concerned over the country’s gas supplies, which currently stand at one and a half months’, due to the risk of Russia halting its gas flow.
Bulgaria gets 90 percent of its natural gas from Russia via Ukraine, putting its supplies in jeopardy, according to officials. Russia’s parliament authorized military intervention in the Crimean peninsula on Saturday causing rising tensions between Ukraine and Russia.
Bulgaria Energy Ministry officials said: “There is no official statement from Russia’s gas giant Gazprom related to cutting its gas flow, but Bulgaria has a high possibility of encountering gas supply problem with Russia."
Russia accused Ukraine of illegally importing its gas in 2009, and stopped gas flows to Ukraine as a consequence. Bulgaria, which imports its gas via Ukraine, is considering diversifying its energy routes to Turkey, Romania, Serbia, although this has not been implemented so far.
