Food protectionism triggered worldwide by Russia-Ukraine war
Some countries tend to restrict food product exports to protect domestic markets with concern over possible global food crisis
ISTANBUL
Food protectionism gained traction across the world because of fear of a possible global food crisis amid a continued war between the world's two largest food suppliers, Russia and Ukraine.
Countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Argentina, Hungary, Indonesia, Algeria, Egypt, Cameroon took steps to stop or restrict the export of some food products, including sugar, wheat, corn, sunflower oil, fertilizer, soybean oil and oil cake, palm oil, lentil, bean, rice, millet, sorghum, and cereal.
Their move is aimed at protecting the domestic market by maintaining the stock levels and keeping prices low.
