At least 12 people drowned, several were injured, and two more are missing after a boat carrying irregular migrants capsized in the English Channel, the French interior minister said on Tuesday.
"Terrible shipwreck in Pas-de-Calais, off Wimereux. The provisional toll stands at 12 dead, 2 missing and several injured," Gerald Darmanin wrote on X.
He noted that emergency services are responding to the incident and that all government services are "mobilized to find the missing and take care of the victims."
Early Monday, French media reported that a massive rescue operation was underway in the English Channel after a boat carrying migrants capsized.
