BELGRADE, Serbia

At least two people died and another is injured after a collapse in a coal mine in eastern Serbia on Friday.

Police in the city of Zajecar told reporters that two people died at the Lubnica Coal Mine.

The police department said the workers were cleaning a bunker in the mine before a wall collapsed on to them, causing them to fall to the bottom of the bunker, according to local media portal, Nova.rs.

Fire and rescue units who rushed to the scene quickly unearthed the buried miners, who had already died, it reported.

The injured miner was transferred to a local health center but his status remains unclear.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, with police and emergency teams are on the scene.

The lignite mine is operated by Resavica, a publicly owned company for underground coal mining.
