BELGRADE, Serbia
Thousands of demonstrators in Albania’s capital, Tirana, gathered Saturday to protest price increases, poverty and migration of young people from the country.
The demonstrations were organized after opposition Democratic Party of Albania (PD) and the Freedom Party (PL) urged Albanians to protest.
The main slogan, ''Albania is at risk,'' took place in front of the Prime Ministry building.
Former President and PL Chairman Ilir Meta said the word of the citizens is one law, one mission.
"You are the one who keeps this country alive with your efforts and sacrifices. You have the right to demand responsibility for everything from the government and every office in this country. You keep the government and the state afloat with the taxes you pay,'' said Meta.
Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha urged everyone to join the demonstrations to shape the country's future.
''This extraordinarily large rally is a powerful siren of hope for every Albanian," said Berisha.
At the end of the protest, demonstrators threw paint on the Prime Ministry building and lit candles on the stairs.
Police took additional measures to ensure security during the protest.
