Croatia’s foreign minister elected head of Council of Europe

STRASBOURG 

Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Wednesday elected Croatian Foreign Minister Marija Pejcinovic Buric as the new head of the Council.

Buric -- who received 159 votes in the first round of voting -- has been elected for the next five years, while Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders bagged 105 votes.

Buric will take up the post on Sep.18, succeeding Thorbjorn Jagland.

Norwegian Jagland has been secretary general of the Council since 2009.
