COPENHAGEN, Denmark

Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned of potential Russian threats to Denmark, emphasizing the need for defense and deterrence measures, reported state media on Friday.

According to DR, while she does not anticipate a direct war of aggression akin to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Frederiksen highlighted the risk of hybrid and cyber attacks.

"The intelligence services in our defense alliance estimate that Russia is rearming so quickly that they could potentially attack a NATO country within a few years," Frederiksen said.

She stressed the importance of unity within NATO and investing in robust defenses against Russia's growing capabilities.

Denmark’s Defence Intelligence Service, in its annual threat report, also identified hybrid attacks and sabotage from Russia as key risks. Frederiksen noted modern society’s reliance on electrification and technology, warning of vulnerabilities that must be addressed to ensure stability.

The Prime Minister underscored 2025 as a critical year for strengthening Europe’s defense capabilities, not only through military investments but also by reducing reliance on adversaries.

Frederiksen criticized Europe’s previous dependence on Russian fossil fuels, particularly natural gas, which she said had come at a “very, very high price.”

She also highlighted Europe’s reliance on Chinese technology, calling for greater independence to fortify European resilience. Despite challenges, Frederiksen affirmed Europe’s global appeal for its liberal democracy and human rights but urged proactive efforts to safeguard these values.

“We must fight more for what we thought we had won in Europe,” she concluded, urging collective action to protect the continent’s stability and freedoms.
