ATHENS

Doctors and healthcare workers in Greece went on a 24-hour strike on Thursday, demanding improved economic conditions, an increase in staff, and enhancements to the health care system.

Responding to a call from hospital workers' unions, protesters gathered in the center of Athens for the strike.

They gathered at Mavili Square and then marched to the parliament building in Syntagma Square, followed by a protest march to the Health Ministry.

Some of them climbed the ministry building and hung a banner reading: "We demand salary increases, mass hiring, and the permanent employment of contracted staff."

They also protested Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis as he left the ministry.
