Finnish police have launched a preliminary criminal investigation into suspected environmental damage at Google's data center construction site in Muhos, following concerns about water management and drainage practices, according to media reports on Thursday.
The Oulu Police Department is examining five investigation requests concerning the site, including one submitted by the Finnish Supervisory Agency, Finnish broadcaster Yle reported.
Police said preliminary findings pointed to "irregularities and shortcomings" in drainage and water management at the construction site, operated by Google's local subsidiary Tuike Finland.
The investigation is focused on suspected environmental damage, although additional suspected offenses could emerge as inquiries progress.
Authorities expect the investigation to continue into 2027, with additional information anticipated in December, according to the report.
The probe follows an order from the Finnish Supervisory Agency to suspend construction at Google's Muhos and Kajaani-Otanmaki projects because environmental impact assessments were not completed.
The company confirmed on Oct. 14 that it had halted preparatory work at both locations.
Regulators also found the company's water management plans insufficient to show it could adequately control environmental risks.
Tuike Finland has until Nov. 5 to submit a more detailed plan addressing drainage infrastructure, monitoring and risks associated with heavy rainfall, melting snow and potentially acidic soils.
The agency warned that failure to comply could result in enforcement action, including a conditional fine.
The projects form part of Google's €13 billion ($14.5 billion) investment in Finland.
