Foreign influence, misinformation threaten Greenland's poll integrity, warns Denmark's intelligence

COPENHAGEN, Denmar

The Danish Police Intelligence Service and the Danish Defence Intelligence Service raised concerns on Friday over increasing misinformation in Greenland’s election campaign, warning of foreign influence operations in the Arctic region, according to state news media.

In an updated threat assessment reported by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, tensions in the Arctic have led to the spread of disinformation, including fake social media profiles impersonating Danish and Greenlandic politicians to polarize public debate.

The intelligence report, published by the Danish Police Intelligence Service, notes that statements from Greenlandic politicians and private individuals have been taken out of context to serve particular narratives. The intelligence report notes that increased American interest in Greenland has prompted misinformation campaigns by various political and influential figures from the US.

Authorities warn of a high threat from cyber espionage against Greenland, emphasizing Russia’s strategic interest in exploiting divisions among NATO countries. While they do not foresee a large-scale, coordinated Russian influence campaign in Greenland, the report claimed that Russia could use ongoing tensions to further its long-term geopolitical objectives.

“Russia is likely to leverage the situation in Greenland as part of its broader effort to create divisions within Western alliances and undermine the credibility of the United States,” the report states.

Additionally, the Danish police and intelligence service believe that Russia’s state-controlled propaganda network is closely monitoring developments in Greenland intending to influence public discourse.

Greenland, a territory under Danish sovereignty since 1953, has drawn interest from the US due to its strategic location and vast mineral resources. US President Donald Trump previously described acquiring Greenland as an “absolute necessity” for US economic security, likening the potential purchase to a “large real estate deal.”
