Germany on Thursday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s decision to extend a ceasefire with Iran and urged Tehran to “seize this opportunity” by returning to diplomatic negotiations.
“Germany welcomes the extension of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran,” the German government said in a statement, adding that this presents an important opportunity to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
“Tehran should seize this opportunity,” the statement said, repeating Berlin’s call for the Iranian government to send a delegation to the planned talks in Islamabad, end its nuclear weapons program, and stop threatening Israel and neighboring states.
Addressing Iran’s demand that Western sanctions be lifted, Berlin said any easing would depend on steps taken by Tehran toward a negotiated settlement.
“If a comprehensive agreement can be reached, the German government is prepared to work, in close coordination with partners, toward gradually easing existing restrictive measures,” the statement said.
But Germany warned that further punitive measures would be considered if Iran follows through on threats to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open without restrictions or tolls and said Germany is prepared to help protect freedom of navigation after an agreement is reached.
“Once a lasting end to hostilities has been achieved, the German government, together with its partners, stands ready to contribute to the free navigation of the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law and in compliance with national procedures,” the statement said.
Germany also said it will continue working through diplomatic channels to bring the war in southern Lebanon to a lasting end.
