Germany’s national rail operator Deutsche Bahn has banned alcohol consumption at all its train stations in a bid to improve passenger safety and cleanliness.
The rule, introduced Thursday under the company’s house regulations, covers public station areas under Deutsche Bahn control, including platforms. Station restaurants remain exempt, and passengers may continue to carry sealed alcoholic drinks in bags. Alcohol is generally still allowed on trains.
At train stations, security personnel will enforce the rule during regular patrols. Those who ignore the ban may face immediate removal from the area. Repeat violators could face longer bans from station premises.
The company described the measure as a response to suggestions from passengers, employees and others seeking safer and cleaner stations. Deutsche Bahn said a recent representative survey found that 79% of respondents supported the ban on alcohol consumption at train stations, while only 9% opposed it.
