Greece recorded a 10.3% drop in the birth rate in 2022, according to a report by the Hellenic Statistics Agency released on Monday.

Specifically, the authority noted that last year, the number of births registered in Greece amounted to 76,541 including 39,558 boys and 36,983 girls, compared to 2021 of 85,346 including 43,998 boys and 41,348 girls.

In these rates, the authority did not include stillbirths, which stood at 446 in 2022, down 1.5% from 453 in 2021.

On the other hand, the death rate in 2022 decreased slightly by 2.2% compared to 2021.

Meanwhile, the divorce rate increased by 4% in 2022 compared to 2021, according to the authority.

Around 14,477 divorces were recorded in 2022 compared to 2021 when 13,921 divorces were registered.

In terms of divorce type, eight out of every 10 divorces approved in the last five years were by mutual consent. In 2022, mutual consent accounted for 80.4% of the total number of divorce cases which stood at 11,638.

In 2022, the 40-44 age group (17.8% men and 20.0% women) had the most divorces, followed by the 45-49 age group (17.6% men and 16.4% women), with 65.6% or 9,500 marriages dissolved after being married for 10 years or more.
