Greek citizen protection minister resigns for 'personal reasons' amid wildfires
Deputy minister for education, religious affairs and sports appointed as new citizen protection minister
LONDON
Greek Minister for Citizen Protection Notis Mitarakis has resigned for "personal reasons," local media reported on Friday.
His resignation came as Greece has been battling wildfires since last week, triggering an evacuation of thousands of people from various areas.
Greek news agency AMNA said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had accepted Mitarakis's resignation.
The Citizen Protection Ministry is responsible for the country’s public security services, including fire services, police, and General Secretariat for Civil Protection.
The report added that Deputy Minister for Education, Religious Affairs and Sports Yiannis Oikonomou has been appointed in his place.
Meanwhile, media reports said Yiannis Vroutsis has been appointed as deputy minister for education, religious affairs, and sports.
The new ministers are expected to be sworn in later today at the Presidential Mansion.
