Latvian parliament elects foreign minister country’s new president

ATHENS

Latvia’s parliament on Wednesday elected the country’s foreign minister its new president.

In the third round of the election, 52 lawmakers out of 100 voted in favor of Edgars Rinkevics, with 37 voted against, said the parliament in a statement.

Rinkevics, 50, has served as foreign minister since 2011.

He is also vice-president of the Latvian National Commission of UNESCO, as well as a board member of the center-right Unity party.
