Man dies in police shooting after London car chase
Independent probe launched into incident following death of man believed to be aged in his 20s

LONDON
A man died in the hospital on Tuesday after being shot by police after a car chase in south London.
Recounting the events that led to the fatal police shooting -- rare in the UK -- the Metropolitan Police said in a statement: "At 9.51pm on Monday specialist firearms officers were in pursuit of a suspect vehicle in the Lambeth area."
A police firearm was discharged amid "tactical contact" with the man's vehicle in south London.
"An occupant of the suspect vehicle, a man believed to be aged in his 20s, sustained a gunshot injury," added the statement.
Though police provided the man with first aid while awaiting an ambulance, he died at 12.16 a.m. British Summer Time on Tuesday (2316GMT Monday) after being taken to the hospital. No one else was reported injured.
As is protocol, the Met contacted the Independent Office for Police Conduct, who launched an independent investigation into the incident.
