Angela Merkel has been reelected as the leader of Germany’s main conservative the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the party confirmed on Tuesday.

The Chancellor received 89.5 percent of delegate votes at the party's convention in the western city of Essen, Armin Laschet, deputy chairman of the party, said.

Despite winning the vote, the Chancellor's popularity fell from the 96 percent she won in 2014.

Merkel has led the party for 16 years.
