ISTANBUL (AA) – Poland's foreign minister wished the US president good luck with his upcoming phone call with his Russian counterpart, according to public broadcaster TVP.

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to speak on the phone Tuesday about a ceasefire in Ukraine.

“We will measure the success of Trump's talks by the quality of the negotiated peace,” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Monday at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

Sikorski expressed hope that Trump would succeed in convincing Putin to give up some “absurd demands” while proving himself to be a good negotiator, as he has touted himself.

“Putin could finish this war in five minutes by just withdrawing,” Sikorski said, adding that the peace talks would be a test for Russia.

Sikorski also stressed that Ukraine accepted the 30-day ceasefire, but Russia has not.

“It is clear who wants peace and who wants war. Russia will want to take over all of Ukraine by other means, and preferably militarily neutralize half of Europe while at it. Russia won’t succeed in that, which doesn’t mean Putin won’t try,” Sikorski said.

The phone call between the US and Russian leaders comes a week after Ukraine agreed to a 30-day ceasefire proposed by Washington during a bilateral meeting in Saudi Arabia.

Putin on Thursday welcomed the temporary truce but stopped short of endorsing it after meeting with Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, saying it must lead to a final settlement that would address the root causes of the conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged Ukraine’s allies to exert strong pressure on Moscow to prevent further delays.

“Putin will try to drag everyone into endless discussions, just like he did with 'Minsk' (agreements over eastern Ukraine), wasting days, weeks, and months on meaningless talks while his guns continue to kill people,” he said Friday.

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia for its mediation efforts and stressed that Ukraine is prepared to work on a structured peace plan once a ceasefire is in place.
