MOSCOW
Russian President Vladimir Putin called on Friday to develop the country's fishing industry despite the Western sanctions.
Speaking at a ceremony to raise the Russian flag on new fishing vessels built at domestic shipyards under the program for upgrading the production capacities of the fishery industry with state support, Putin noted that the fishing industry is one of the key sectors, taking part in providing Russia's food security.
He expressed certainty that despite all external challenges and sanctions, the fishing industry will develop, increasing its competitiveness.
Putin pointed out that amplifying the fishing industry will lead to the generation of employment in Russia.
The Russian president listed reducing the dependence on foreign technology, spare parts and services as an important task for this sector.
"One of our key strategic priorities is the renewal of the fishing fleet, the construction of modern, well–equipped, reliable vessels for fishing companies that meet high environmental requirements and that are capable of mining diligently, without damage to ecosystems, the wealth that we must pass on to future generations," he said.
Putin also noted that on Fisherman Day every year -- marked in Russia on the second Sunday of July -- the Russian fishing fleet gets three new vessels.
"I am sure that the new vessels will take their rightful place in the ranks of the domestic fishing fleet, expand its capabilities and competitive advantages, and their crews will walk with honor and pride under the flag of the Russian Federation, and will definitely achieve high results thanks to their professional, friendly, and well-coordinated work," he said.
