Sending Western troops to Ukraine risks World War III: Luxembourg foreign minister

ANTALYA, Türkiye

The foreign minister of Luxembourg has warned that sending Western troops to Ukraine would bring us on the brink of a third world war.

Xavier Bettel spoke to Anadolu on Saturday at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum about Europe's stance on the Ukraine war, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and the upcoming EU parliament elections.

"So, we should avoid to send troops and we should continue to support Ukraine and [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin should realize that they did an error," he said.

According to the minister, sending troops in aid of Kyiv "would be really" the last thing to do.

Earlier this week, French President Emmanuel Macron refused to rule out sending Western troops to Ukraine, where Russia launched a “special military operation” two years ago.

Bettel said Luxembourg supports Ukraine, and also the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, stressing that women and children of Palestine were victims and without the money people could die of hunger as well.

Luxembourg has continued funding UNRWA as a drove of Western nations suspended their contributions over allegations that its workers took part in the Oct. 7 attacks against Israel.

Regarding the European Parliamentary elections in June, Bettel said he wished democrats will hold the majority.
