BELGRADE, Serbia

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was discharged from the hospital to home care on Friday after undergoing two operations and 16 days of treatment following an assassination attempt.

Fico was shot and injured on May 15 in an assassination attempt in front of the House of Culture in the central city of Handlova.

He immediately underwent two operations lasting several hours at the hospital in Banska Bystrica.

"Robert Fico was moved tonight (May 30) from our hospital to Bratislava," said Ruzena Mataseje, a hospital spokeswoman, without elaborating on where exactly Fico was transported to.

On Friday morning, Miriam Lapunikova, the director of the hospital, said the prime minister expressed his desire to continue his recovery at his home after leaving the hospital.

Lapunikova added that they are satisfied with the prime minister's condition, which is improving.

Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok said earlier that the attacker was alone and was not a member of any extremist organization, whether left or right.

Estok added that 32 others were questioned during an investigation.

The National Security Council of Slovakia, which convened after the attack, announced that a state of emergency would not be declared but the security of politicians who might be targeted had been increased.

It said an investigation was launched into the first response of Fico's guards to the attacker.

Slovakian media identified the suspect as 71-year-old Juraj Cintulu, who was immediately arrested and placed in custody on charges of attempted murder.

Pellegrini, Fico’s coalition partner, urged political parties to suspend or tone down campaigning ahead of the European Parliament elections on June 6 after the assassination attempt.

He emphasized that Slovakia should avoid “further confrontation.”
