ANKARA

Türkiye's foreign minister spoke with his British counterpart over the phone about the latest developments across the world, according to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources on Monday.

Hakan Fidan and David Lammy exchanged views on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, according to the ministry.

The top diplomats also touched on recent discussions regarding the European security structure and the role of non-EU states in maintaining the continent’s security.

The latest situation in Syria and bilateral relations between Türkiye and the UK, especially cooperation in the defense sector, were also among the discussed topics.

Bashar Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on Dec. 8, 2024, ending the regime of the Baath Party, which had been in power since 1963.

The war between Ukraine and Russia, which completed its third year last month, continues with heavy military clashes, along with ongoing diplomatic efforts for a resolution.

While Ukraine receives sustained military and economic support from the West, Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that the war could end within a month or two if Western nations cease their assistance to Kyiv.

In a recent development, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution urging an end to the war and calling for lasting peace.
