Recent government data reveals a slight decrease in knife and offensive weapon offenses processed by the Criminal Justice System (CJS), accompanied by notable changes in sentencing practices for different age groups.

Figures from the Justice Ministry, covering up to the end of March 2024, indicate a 3% reduction in cases, with a total of 18,572 cases handled. Despite this decline, 29% of offenders received immediate custodial sentences, underscoring the ongoing severity with which these offenses are addressed.

The most prevalent knife-related offense remains the possession of an article with a blade or point, accounting for 71% of all cases. This statistic highlights the persistent issue of bladed weapons in criminal activities despite efforts to reduce their use.

The data also shows a decade-long trend of increasing sentence lengths for adults involved in knife crimes. The average immediate custody sentence for adults has risen to 7.4 months, reflecting a 6% increase since the year ending March 2014. This trend signifies a tougher stance on adult offenders, aimed at deterring repeat offenses and underscoring the serious consequences of knife possession and use.

In contrast, the average sentence length for young offenders aged 10 to 17 has decreased significantly. This age group now faces an average immediate custody sentence of 6.1 months, marking a 25% reduction over the past decade. This decline suggests a shift towards alternative interventions and rehabilitation efforts for younger offenders.

While the overall number of knife crime cases is slightly down, the varying approaches to sentencing for adults and youths illustrate a nuanced strategy. This strategy seeks to balance deterrence with rehabilitation efforts, reflecting ongoing efforts to address knife crime effectively across different demographics.
