UK advises citizens to leave Russia if their 'presence not essential'

LONDON

On day 10 of the Russia-Ukraine war, Britain advised its citizens to leave Russia if their presence is not essential.

Saturday’s update from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office “advises against all travel to the whole of Russia due to the lack of available flight options to return to the UK, and the increased volatility in the Russian economy.”

“If your presence in Russia is not essential, we strongly advise that you consider leaving by remaining commercial routes.”

The update came as Western sanctions over Russian airlines by more than 35 countries have limited the travel options to and from Russia.

“If you are in Russia, you should be aware that it may not be possible to fly directly to the UK, or via EU countries, and should amend any travel plans accordingly,” the update said.

“Check the latest information with your airline or travel provider. Connecting flights, largely via the Middle East and Turkey are operational for travel from Russia to the UK and other destinations.”

The update also warned British citizens that they “should be aware that any amounts of Russian currency you hold may reduce in value over the coming days.”

It said: “There are also reports that foreign nationals in Russia are having difficulty using ATM and banking services. You should be aware that it may not be possible for you to access your funds through Russian banks.”

Last Monday, Russia closed its airspace to 36 countries, reciprocating sanctions by those countries targeting Russian planes.

The tit-for-tat move banned air carriers from Albania, Austria, Anguilla, Belgium, Bulgaria, British Virgin Islands, the UK, Hungary, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Jersey, Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Italy, Canada, the Greek Cypriot administration, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland, France, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Estonia, and Denmark, including Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
