Portuguese premier’s party secures key municipalities in local elections, far-right wins 3 mayoralties for 1st time
Far-right Chega party expands presence in municipal councils nationwide

ISTANBUL
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's Social Democratic Party (PSD) won a majority in key municipalities in Sunday's local elections, while the far-right Chega won three mayoral positions for the first time.
According to broadcaster RTP, the PSD leads in local elections, controlling more councils and key urban centers such as Sintra, Gaia, Lisbon, and Porto.
PSD reportedly received 30,000 more votes in Lisbon than in the previous election in 2021, with Mayor Carlos Moedas reelected.
Meanwhile, the Socialists (PS) won significant victories, regaining five district capitals.
Far-right Chega, which finished second in the last legislative elections, won local elections for the first time, capturing three mayoral seats in Entroncamento, Albufeira, and Santana.
Party president Andre Ventura described it as "a good night" but acknowledged that the party fell short of its overall goals.
Although Chega failed to capture major city halls, the far-right party expanded its presence in municipal councils nationwide and could influence policy in several municipalities.
