Veteran Egyptian journalist Mohamed Hassanein Heikal died Wednesday at the age of 93, Egyptian state television said.

Heikal’s health had deteriorated in recent days. Heikal was the editor-in-chief of Egypt’s flagship newspaper Al-Ahram from 1957 until 1974 and has been a commentator on Arab affairs for more than 50 years.

The veteran journalist was a close confident of former President Gamal abdel-Nasser and represented his ideology of pan-Arabism.

He was appointed a minister of information in 1970 but resigned in 1974 over differences with Nasser's successor Anwar Sadat.
