Hezbollah announces death of fighter in clashes with Israeli army
Number of Hezbollah fighters killed by Israeli forces since Oct. 8 rises to 167
BEIRUT
Lebanon’s Hezbollah group announced the death of one of its fighters on Monday in border clashes with the Israeli army, bringing the number of its members killed during the day to three.
It issued a statement identifying the fighter as Haydar Hussein Ibrahim from the town of Odaisseh in southern Lebanon.
The statement did not specify the mission the fighter was on when he was targeted but said he was killed "on the road to Jerusalem," a reference to Hezbollah’s efforts in support of the Palestinian resistance facing Israel’s devastating onslaught in Gaza.
Earlier in the day, Hezbollah also mourned two of its fighters who were killed in clashes with the Israeli army in the southern Lebanese border area.
The number of Hezbollah fighters killed by Israeli forces since Oct. 8 has risen to 167, based on previous statements by the group.
Exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israeli forces have so far led to the deaths of 30 Lebanese civilians, including three journalists and three children, as well as a soldier from the Lebanese army.
On the Israeli side, Hezbollah's attacks have resulted in the deaths of six Israeli civilians and 10 soldiers, according to statements from the Israeli army and authorities in Tel Aviv.
Tensions have flared along the border between Lebanon and Israel amid intermittent exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah in the deadliest clashes since the two sides fought a full-scale war in 2006.
The border tension comes amid an Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on Oct. 7.
