JERUSALEM

The Israeli army plans to introduce new security measures on border with Egypt following last week’s gunfire that killed three soldiers, according to local media on Monday.

Israeli army soldiers were asked to be vigilant against any unusual movement by Egyptian soldiers as a "possible attack,” Army Radio reported.

According to the broadcaster, the Israeli army assumes that Egyptian soldiers are "no longer trusted" in regard to Israel, and that Israeli soldiers shall prepare to fire in order to prevent Egyptian soldiers from approaching the border.

There was no comment from the Egyptian authorities on the report.

On June 3, an Egyptian police officer crossed into Israel and killed three Israeli soldiers.

The Egyptian army said the officer was chasing drug smugglers and an exchange of fire occurred with the three Israeli soldiers killed in the incident.

But the Israeli narrative was that an officer-turned-terrorist infiltrated the border and killed two Israeli soldiers at a border post and then a third soldier was killed in an exchange of fire with the attacker, who was also killed.

On Sunday, three Israeli army generals arrived in Cairo for talks with their Egyptian counterparts on the border gunfire incident.
