LONDON
Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been suspended from the party following a physical altercation with a constituent.
CCTV footage obtained by MailOnline appears to show Amesbury engaging in a confrontation with a constituent early Saturday morning in his Cheshire constituency of Runcorn and Helsby.
Amesbury confronts the man in the video, clearly agitated.
Footage shows the MP squaring up to the constituent before striking him in the face, causing the man to fall backward into the road. He then appears to punch the victim at least six more times while he lies on the ground.
Amesbury later claimed in a statement that he "felt threatened" before the altercation.
A spokesperson for the Labour Party confirmed Amesbury's administrative suspension, stating: "Mike Amesbury MP has been assisting Cheshire Police with their inquiries following an incident on Friday night. As these inquiries are now ongoing, the Labour Party has administratively suspended Mr. Amesbury’s membership pending an investigation."
