Lithuania's president re-elected in run-off vote
Gitanas Nauseda wins landslide victory after receiving 74.43%
ISTANBUL
Lithuania's incumbent President Gitanas Nauseda won a second five-year term after obtaining 74.43% of the vote in run-off elections.
“The people of Lithuania have given me a great mandate of trust, and I am well aware that I will have to cherish this credit of trust,” Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT) cited Nauseda as telling reporters in Vilnius on Sunday.
“Now that I have five years of experience, I believe that I will be able to use this jewel in a proper way, first and foremost to achieve the goals of prosperity for all the people of Lithuania,” he added.
Nauseda also highlighted security and foreign policy as two significant focal points during his second term.
He and Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte faced off in the run-off on Sunday.
The two also competed in the presidential run-off in 2019, when Nauseda won after obtaining 66% of the vote.
