WASHINGTON

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, announced Wednesday he will not seek reelection.

"The decision of whether to run for reelection has not been easy. I truly love the job of being United States Senator. But in my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch.

"So, I am announcing today that I will not be seeking reelection at the end of my term," Durbin, 80, said on X, sharing a video message.

First elected to the Senate in 1996, Durbin has served in the upper chamber for five terms.

"The people of Illinois have honored me with this responsibility longer than anyone elected to the Senate in our state's history," Durbin said.

He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1982, representing the Springfield-based 20th district.

"I've given over half of my life to House and Senate congressional service. I've always tried to stand up to power on behalf of the people of Illinois and our country," Durbin said.
