MOSCOW

Muscovites are leaving flowers at the Solovetsky Stone monument for Russian opposition figure Alexi Navalny, who reportedly died in prison Friday.

Security forces have taken security measures around the monument which is dedicated to political repression victims.

Mourners formed a queue to leave flowers at the monument.

Navalny was arrested in January 2021 after being treated for poisoning in a German hospital. Western countries and Navalny blamed Russia for the poisoning, a claim the Kremlin denies.

In August, he was sentenced to 19 years in prison for extremism and other crimes. He was already serving an 11-year and five-month sentence for fraud.
