A Russian skier was killed on Thursday when an avalanche hit a ski resort in the north of Indian-administered Kashmir.

Six other Russian skiers and one local guide were rescued after an avalanche hit the 8,695-foot-high Gulmarg ski resort, also known as Army Ridge, in the Baramulla district, officials said.

The region’s Information Department said on X that a collaborative effort between the Gulmarg Ski Patrol of the Tourism Department and regional police resulted in the successful rescue of the Russian skiers' group.

“Despite the valiant efforts of the rescue team, one Russian skier tragically lost his life due to the avalanche,” read the statement.

Earlier, at 14:00 local time (0830GMT), the massive avalanche struck the ski slopes at the resort's Kong Doori peak, trapping the group of Russian skiers.

The incident occurred during the fourth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games, which was officially launched by the region's Lieutenant Governor on Wednesday.

At least 600 athletes are taking part in the games.

Nuzhat Gull, secretary of the Sports Council in the region in a separate statement on X said the avalanche that hit Gulmarg had no effect on athletes competing in the ski and snowboard events of the Khelo India Winter Games 2024 at Kangdoori Phase.

“All necessary precautions have been taken for safety,” she added.

Kashmir region is prone to massive avalanches during the peak winter season, and in recent days, local authorities have issued avalanche warnings.

Last year, two Polish skiers were killed in the region in an avalanche.
