WASHINGTON

Former President Donald Trump was notified that he is the target of an ongoing investigation regarding his handling of classified information while out of office, according to a report on Wednesday.

Trump was informed by special counsel Jack Smith's office through a letter in recent weeks, said ABC News. Smith was appointed to lead the classified documents case in November.

The investigation is examining allegations that Trump possessed classified documents at his Florida residence and impeded federal authorities from accessing and retrieving them.

Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social that he was not told that he is being indicted and that he has not done anything wrong, adding that he is “the target of a weaponized Justice Department and FBI.”

According to sources cited by ABC News, Trump's lawyers met with officials from the Justice Department on Monday.

Smith is also probing the former president's efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Meanwhile, Trump also faces charges in New York City, where he is accused of 34 counts of falsifying business records concerning the payment of hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the closing stages of the 2016 presidential campaign.
