US defense secretary to meet Israeli counterpart on Wednesday
Defense chiefs to discuss ongoing developments in Middle East, security matters, says Pentagon spokesman
ISTANBUL
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will meet with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant at the Pentagon on Wednesday, just two days after the first anniversary of Israel’s ongoing offensive against the Gaza Strip, and amid Tel Aviv’s massive bombardment in Lebanon.
The two defense chiefs are expected to discuss ongoing developments in the Middle East and security matters, said Patrick Ryder, department spokesman.
Ryder said Austin "looks forward to welcoming" Gallant in Washington.
No further information was provided.
The meeting comes as Israeli violence rises in the Middle East one year after Israel began its relentless offensive against Gaza last Oct. 7, killing nearly 42,000 people and injuring over 97,000. The US has been deeply engaged in supporting Israel's actions, including with military aid.
