CAIRO / ISTANBUL

Six Russians were killed and 39 foreign tourists were rescued after a tourist submarine sank off Egypt’s Red Sea city of Hurghada, Egyptian authorities said on Thursday.

“There are no missing people in the sinking of the tourist submarine in Hurghada,” Red Sea Governor Amr Hanafi said in a statement.

He confirmed that the submarine had a valid license, and the crew captain held the necessary academic certifications.

“Coordination and communication are ongoing with all embassies, consulates, and relevant authorities, to provide all necessary facilitation, issue required documents for the passengers, and ensure all aspects of medical care are delivered,” he said.

While Hanafy did not mention the nationalities of the dead victims, the Red Sea Governorate confirmed that the six were Russian nationals.

The statement said that the submarine was carrying 50 people, including 45 tourists from Russia, India, Norway, and Sweden, in addition to a crew of five Egyptians.
