Ali Larijani elected Iran assembly speaker for 3rd term
Veteran politician beats out two competitors to win third consecutive term as parliament speaker
TEHRAN
Iran’s parliament Wednesday elected Ali Larijani as assembly speaker for his third consecutive term in office.
The vote, held by parliament's 290-seat general assembly, was between Larijani, Mohammed Reza Aref and Hamid Reza Haji Babai.
None of the nominees were able to win enough votes in a first round of voting, in which Babai was eliminated.
Larijani won a second round of voting, clinching 147 out of 279 votes cast.
