Sena al-Beltagy, the wife of a leading figure of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohammed Beltagy, and mother of 17 year old Asmaa al-Beltagy, who was killed on August 14 in the crackdown by Egyptian security on anti-coup demonstrations at Rab’a Adawiya square, spoke to Anadolu Agency.

Sena al- Beltagy told of her deep grief about what has happened in Egypt and to her slain daughter Asmaa, stating that they have lost their freedom and precious daughter, Asmaa.

“We have been exposed to many problems and calamities, but the martyrdom of Asmaa was the gravest one. I have lost my only daughter; my sons are often away due to their jobs. Asmaa would always be with me, but now I am alone.

Indeed I feel as if I have lost my mother rather than my daughter because of her affection towards me,” said Sena al-Beltagy.

Stating that they had not expected the crackdown to be so violent, al-Beltagy told about the day of the crackdown by saying that there was a very dense gas attack and they witnessed many people being martyred around them.

“She was too young but still she was not affected by the gas that much. Under the pouring gas and bullets, she took out a small bottle of water from her bag and made ablutions,” added Sena al-Beltagy.

Stating that Allah has taken her from the homeliness of this world, the mother Beltagy said, “She was killed while reading Quran for the martyrs of Adawiyya. She was martyred while resisting oppression and atrocity.”

Referring to the tears which Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan shed while listening to the letter Mohammed Beltagy wrote for Asmaa, Sena al Beltagy said, “I felt my faith in humanity restored, after the silence of the whole world toward the attrocity the oppression and violence we experienced.”

Talking about the good manners and deeds of Asmaa, her older brother Ammar al-Beltagy stated that hospitals had refused their services to wounded or deceased persons from Rabaa Adawiya Square.

Ammar explained that while they were carrying the body of martyred Asmaa out of the Rabia complex, they were fired on and the body felt from their grasp.

“She remained on the ground for half an hour, then I carried her to 8 hospitals but none accepted the dead body of my sister. In the end the Huseyn Hospital accepted it,” said Ammar.

Ammar also claimed that the Egyptian media contradicted reports about the martyrdom of Asmaa.
