Egyptian authorities have detained 70 Sudanese nationals while trying to cross into Israel, Sudan’s Foreign Ministry said.
Ministry spokesman Gharib Allah Khidir told the official SUNA News Agency on Saturday the Sudanese migrants were sent to the al-Qanater prison in Cairo.
He said the Sudanese embassy in Cairo was in contact with Egyptian authorities to follow up on the conditions of the detained migrants.
There was no comment from Egyptian authorities on the report.
In November, Egyptian security forces shot dead five Sudanese migrants while attempting to cross into Israel from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, which is a transit hub for African migrants hoping to cross into Israel -- with which Sinai shares a border -- in search of work.
