The Egyptian military on Wednesday announced they executed a top militant suspect, who was convicted for carrying out many terror attacks.
"This morning, the death sentence was carried out against the terrorist Hisham Ashmawi," Col. Tamer al-Rifai, spokesman for the military, said in a Facebook post.
Ashmawi, a former Special Forces officer, had been accused of targeting an Italian consulate in the country and an assassination attempt on Egypt's attorney-general.
In May 2019, Ashmawi had been handed over to Egypt by a militia affiliated with Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar.
