Syrian, Pakistani leaders discuss strengthening cooperation in New York

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday discussed strengthening bilateral ties on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Sharif reaffirmed Islamabad’s “strong commitment to its historic and fraternal relations with Syria” and its support for Syria’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and political independence, while wishing the Syrian people success in their efforts toward stabilization, peace and economic recovery, according to his office.

The two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral ties through high-level exchanges, institutional mechanisms and cooperation in trade, investment, education, information technology and other areas of mutual interest.

Sharif also expressed Pakistan’s “readiness to contribute to Syria’s reconstruction and economic recovery.”

The Pakistani prime minister emphasized the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and respect for the UN Charter in promoting regional peace and stability.

Al-Sharaa and Sharif also discussed the regional situation, with Sharif reaffirming Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and a just and lasting resolution to the Palestine issue in line with relevant UN resolutions and international law.
