DAMASCUS, Syria

Syrian warplanes have carried out airstrikes in Eastern Ghouta area on the outskirts of capital Damascus on Monday, killing 10 people, said Syrian opposition officials.

According to civil defense officials, regime warplanes hit civilian targets in the town of Ayn Tarma of opposition-controlled Eastern Ghouta.

The same officials said many others were injured in the attack. Houses and vehicles were damaged as well.

The infrastructure in the town, which has been besieged by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces, collapsed after intensive airstrikes, leading loss of power and water, according to an Anadolu Agency correspondent on-site.

Syria has remained locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011, when the regime of Bashar al-Assad cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, more than 250,000 people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced, according to UN figures.
