Turkey denies reports of N. Iraq border closure
Habur border gate with northern Iraq remains open amid tighter security checks, says customs minister
ANKARA
Turkey's Habur border gate with northern Iraq remains open, but security checks have been tightened, Customs and Trade Minister Bulent Tufenkci said Monday.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Tufenkci denied media reports claiming that Ankara had closed the border gate after the northern Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government insisted on holding an independence referendum scheduled for Monday.
"There is no closure right now," Tufenkci said, adding that crossings were "strictly controlled for security reasons".
Travelers from Iraq are allowed to enter into Turkey, albeit amid tighter checks, the minister said. "Controls have also been tightened for vehicles," he added.
Tufenkci noted that Ankara would "reevaluate the situation according to the developments in the following hours".
