ISLAMABAD
A U.S. drone strike in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region killed seven suspected militants and four others on Thursday.
It was the twelfth drone strike in 2014 and it came only two days after Pakistan demanded that U.S. unmanned bombing operations be stopped.
A predator drone fired two missiles at a compound in South Waziristan, an area bordering Afghanistan, a senior Pakistani military official, on condition of anonymity, said.
South Waziristan is one of seven semi-autonomous tribal regions in Pakistan and home to the powerful Mehsud and Wazir tribes. The founders of the Taliban network in Pakistan were from the Mehsud tribe.
The U.S. claims that its strikes accurately target Taliban and Al Qaeda militants hiding in the region but rights groups, including Amnesty International, say that the majority of victims are civilians.
More than 3,400 people have been killed in 400 drone strikes, mostly in the North Waziristan tribal area, since 2004.
